Memphis Transformed is a progressive campaign that propels the city toward a zero net waste circular economy. We are a community – a network of over 30 nonprofit partners – helping to build a brighter, more vibrant Memphis.
CLEANEST CITY IN THE WORLD?
BACKGROUND
The Memphis Transformed initiative was founded in 2018 by the Chairman’s Circle of the Greater Memphis Chamber. Initially Memphis Transformed was to be a catalyst to reclaim the city’s title as the “Nation’s Cleanest City,” an honor that was earned and maintained during the late 1940s through the early 1950s.
More recent research showed that the city’s litter problem is a part of a much larger environmental sustainability challenge. In 2019, stakeholders decided that Memphis Transformed would address the overarching issues of litter, waste pollution, food waste and food insecurity, property blight and neighborhood stabilization.
