The UrbanArt Commission has selected four neighborhoods – including two in North Memphis – for a new community art program it’s launching later this year.
The Carpenter Art Garden in Binghampton, Cherokee Heights Civic Club, South Memphis Alliance and HUG Park Friends for Gooch Park, at 1974 Hunter Ave., were selected among the 11 proposals for the new Neighborhood Art Initiative.
The Neighborhood Art Initiative was created through funding from the Assisi Foundation. The new UAC program was developed to create new public art projects to show how public art can complement the existing work and programs in these neighborhoods.
The UAC awarded the four projects totaling $120,000. Plans are currently being developed with the four neighborhoods, which will work in partnership with the UAC. The UAC plans to announce calls to artists for the four projects later this year.
